The Gift of ADHD

gift of adhd

In this holiday season, it seems that I keep re-discovering the lesson that thankfulness changes us for the better. In my quest to be truly thankful for the gift of ADHD at our house, I've come across some interesting personalities who also live (or have lived) successfully with either diagnosed or undiagnosed ADHD. Politicians like Abraham Lincoln and Winston Churchill, artists like Vincent Van Gogh and Pablo Picasso weren't diagnosed with ADHD, but when we read about their lives and their characteristics, it sounds like classic ADHD. The same is true for Galileo, Leonard Davinci, … [Read more...]

Attitude of Gratitude

adhd inattentive - being thankful

It's an old story with updated technology. A shoe salesman landed on a tropical island. He felt the warm sun on his face and took off his tie. Then he saw the barefooted natives. How could he sell shoes here? He whipped out his i-phone and sent the message back to the home office: "This territory you assigned me is a big mistake! No one wears shoes here!" And within 24 hours, he was on a plane back home. Shoe Salesman #2 landed on the day his competitor left. He was so excited when he saw the barefooted natives that he sold every pair of shoes in his suitcase and text messaged his boss. … [Read more...]

Ten Classroom Strategies to Help Focus

504 plan

Everyone struggles to focus at some point. At the most recent back-to-school night, as I shuttled from 9th grade classroom to classroom, I was reminded of how much listening a student does in any given day. Because I've heard so many "back-to-school" speeches, I noticed that I was zoning out after the first few minutes, and suddenly I had renewed empathy for anyone diagnosed with ADHD.   While no one helpful hint is a cure-all or expected to work every time, it helps to have a ready arsenal of creative ideas to initiate or regain a child's focus. Take a look and see what works for … [Read more...]

“Momma, What’s For Supper?”

Lebanese Salad

I quickly realized what bad timing it was to send a newsletter focusing on nutrition on Halloween. So I waited a couple days. Ready?   This ghoulish holiday brings me to an important nutritional point: all things in moderation. Lesley has one friend whose parents are diabetic and isn't usually allowed sweet snacks. Lesley has noticed that whenever there are cookies, brownies or any sort of dessert available, her friend routinely overindulges. Halloween … [Read more...]
