Timing’s Everything for an ADHD Child

Red Shirting for ADHD

Kayla may have shared with you about how she almost kept Mike out of kindergarten for a year to let him start a year later. She and I have been discussing this issue lately because many kids (ADHD or not) benefit from maturing a bit before they start their school careers. What Mike ended up doing was taking a gap year after his first year of college. It looks like Kayla’s instincts about holding him back a year were accurate – he just ended up taking the time a little later than anticipated. We have our own timing story. When Lesley was 4, she started kindergarten in Maryland. It … [Read more...]

Screen Out All Distraction – ADHD and Television

Television and ADHD

First there was the television….then the computer….the Wii….the iPad and cell phones that do everything from cruise the internet to take pictures. Screens full of information can easily distract your ADHD-1 teen or tween from doing anything productive. I know that a kid who says he's working on a term paper on his laptop can have windows active with Facebook, Youtube videos and several virtual chatting conversations. Despite the excuse you may hear - "But Mom, I need to get on Facebook to get my assignment from Jessica!" - most screen time isn't that fruitful. How can you, the … [Read more...]

Brock and Lesley

Like Kayla told you last week, I'm Brock Myers, and I'll be writing a good bit for adhd-inattentive.com. I have a 14-year-old daughter who's ADHD inattentive, and like you, I've gained a lot of valuable tips by reading Who Put the Ketchup in the Medicine Cabinet? This newsletter has allowed me to learn so much from other parents! I love the new focus that Michelle shared on the blog when she started seeing "how ADHD is really a gift and not a deficit." It's so true for Lesley who's the youngest in our family. (Her brother Edison is in his second year in university, and her sister Olivia is … [Read more...]

Getting Organized with a Google Calendar

ADHD organizing -Google Calendar

Are you organized for the school year yet? Do you have your calendars, your color coded notebooks, your staging areas near the back door? We've talked quite a bit about getting organized by having a shared calendar. Lots of our problems with ADHD kids stem from them - and us - being disorganized, forgetting things, and so forth. Most of us have a big paper calendar in the kitchen, but we've discussed that there isn't a great way to sync things electronically from dad to mom to kid to kid - especially for those of us who don't have web enabled phones. Google has solved that for us. For … [Read more...]

Introducing Brock Myers

September 3rd! It's seriously hard for me to believe that summer is over. I looked back, and it's been a really long time since I've sent an Ounce of Ketchup email! Our family has seen some interesting changes since then. Ron has graduated from college (Hear the Hallelujah Chorus?!). Joe is deployed on a ship in the Persian Gulf. Mike is back in an academic program at community college, and Ash just finished showing me how he figured out some Chemistry II problem involving moles. And no, I do not know what he is talking about. As for me, my husband and I have started a new business that has … [Read more...]
